The Board of Trustees of School District No. 58, Bingham County, Idaho met in a work session at 4:00 pm on Monday, January 13th 2025 at the Aberdeen School District office located at 268 S 4th W Suite A Aberdeen, Idaho.
CALL TO ORDER AND ESTABLISHMENT OF A QUORUM
Chairman Brian Rowlan opened the meeting at 4:00 p.m. Present were Amy Burusco, Sherrie Mauroner and James Patten. Aimee Elliott was absent. A quorum was established.
PURPOSE OF MEETING AND BUSINESS CONDUCTED
The meeting was advertised to discuss district projects including an athletic practice field, high school gym floor painting & finishing and other district needs.
Members of the community were present for the work session including football and soccer coaches, the City of Aberdeen Mayor Larry Barrett, school administrators, Superintendent Ward and district staff. Instead of installing a new athletic practice field first, the existing football field was determined to be of higher priority in repairing. The football field has many holes in the sod due to overuse that is dangerous to the students and community that practice and play on the field. Some proposed ideas for fixing the football field included a new sprinkling system, crowning for proper drainage, repair and replacement of sod and aerating the field. An aerator can be rented to periodically aerate the field to keep the sod healthy and properly maintained for regular use.
There is a need for a new athletic practice field. Heavy use of the current football field which is used for both practice and games is damaging the sod and the ability for the field to remain healthy and aerated. A new practice field can either be installed on the existing property of the school district next to the existing high school football field or a city park can be used. The school district has canal water rights to the existing property that can be piped in for watering the field as needed. Mayor Larry Barrett is open to Posse Park being used as a practice field and there may be ADA bathrooms coming to the park from a grant he has applied for. Wahlen field will have ADA bathrooms and a drinking fountain along with lighting for evening games, however the field is already regularly used by the community for youth football and soccer and scheduling may be difficult to do. Trustee Rowlan would like the practice field to have a gate and to be fenced off to reduce damage to the sod. Mayor Larry Barrett requested that the school district keep in contact with the city on the direction the school will go so he can help where he can with the practice field. Superintendent Ward will place a call for bids for the football field repairs and another call for bids for installing an athletic practice field to see what options are available and the costs associated with these projects.
The high school gym floor may need to be resurfaced and repainted. High school principal Travis Pincock said the gym floor hasn’t been repainted for about 15 years. Lead Custodian Wendy Mitchell and Superintendent Ward will work on receiving bids to resurface and paint the gym floor. Some options include a basic sanding and repainting or having the school logo painted on the gym floor and resurfaced.
The elementary school gym ceiling tiles are falling off and need to be replaced. Superintendent Ward will place a call for bids to replace the elementary school gym ceiling tiles.
ADJOURNMENT
A motion was made by Trustee Mauroner and seconded by Trustee Burusco to adjourn the meeting. The motion passed and the meeting adjourned at 5:15 pm.
