Board Minutes: 08/18/2021

The Board of Trustees of School District No. 58, Bingham County, Idaho met in regular session at 7:00 p.m. on August 18, 2021 at the Aberdeen School District Office in Aberdeen, Idaho.

CALL TO ORDER, ESTABLISHMENT OF A QUORUM

The meeting was called to order at 7:06 p.m. by Board Chairman Todd Lowder. Also present were Mike Shackelford, Sherrie Maruoner and Elaine Blik. David Wahlen was absent. A quorum was established.

PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE

Those present recited the Pledge of Allegiance.

DELEGATION AND PATRON INPUT

There was no delegation or patron input.

SUPERINTENDENT and ADMINISTRATOR REPORTS

Superintendent Ward discussed her written report. The high school gym has been finished and the new district office area is fully demolished. A new intercom system and bell system is being installed in the old high school so the gym can be connected to the new high school. The greenhouse project is making progress and the district is ready for school to begin. Student orientation is Friday, August 13th from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. Buses begin their routes for the first day of school on August 16th. Superintendent Ward added that the high school students painted the football bleachers and they look good.

Ann Mennear did not provide a written report. Mrs. Mennear added that an active shooter training was held for the faculty on August 12th with the Blackfoot Police Department and it was educational experience. Things are going well for the first week back to school.

Travis Pincock did not provide a written report. Mr. Pincock added that it’s great to be back to school and the school building projects are looking great. He is happy to have two new teachers hired this year under the Learning Loss funds and thinks this was a good use of these funds. He is looking forward to high school sports starting soon.

Robi Jo Colton discussed her written report. Mrs. Colton highlighted that the teachers and staff attended the Journeys curriculum professional development on July 20 & 21. The elementary school teachers will participate in professional development with Math Expressions in August, Journeys-part II-DATA in Septemberand Dimensions-science in October. Ms. Smith, Mrs. Smith, Ms. George, Ms. Yorgason, Ms. Anderson, Ms. Park, Mrs. Rudeen, Mrs. Shackelford and Mrs. Colton attended the PBIS training this summer. Their team will continue to implement and strengthen the program through the school year. Aberdeen Elementary School would like to collect student fees only as they have scheduled trips and activities. As each activity or field trip is planned and scheduled by the grade level team, fees will be collected from those who choose to attend. Mrs. Colton added that the gym looks great and she would like to see the elementary school painted gray with black doors too.

David Vaughn discussed his written report and highlighted that the students who attended summer school grades 3-8 will be given the shortened interim comprehensive assessment (SICA). This is to monitor student’s progress for the funding that was received through the Governor’s Learning Loss Grant. Emily Perkes, who teaches in the Extended Resource Room at the elementary school applied for and received a grant from the Idaho State Department for innovative ideas in special education. Mrs. Perkes will be using the grant to purchase supplies, technology and curriculum to help students in her classroom.

APPROVAL OF AGENDA

There were changes to the agenda to remove Business Items-Actions 8D. approve student open enrollment application and to add Business Items – Discussion 9D. to discuss the middle school Yellowstone trip.

A motion was made by Trustee Shackelford and seconded by Trustee Mauroner to approve the agenda as amended. The motion passed.

A motion was made by Trustee Mauroner and seconded by Trustee Shackelford to approve consent items 7 A-E as presented. The motion passed.

After further discussion of Board policy 442, a motion was made by Trustee Mauroner and seconded by Trustee Blik to approve Board policies 270, 402, 418, 442 as revised, 444, 456, 541, 543, 544, 555, 562, 876 and 904. The motion passed.

Approve Hiring Janae Barela and Sadie Pulliam for One Year as Full-Time Learning Loss Teachers

A motion was made by Trustee Blik and seconded by Trustee Maruoner to approve hiring Janae Barela and Sadie Pulliam for one year as full-time Learning Loss teachers. The motion passed.

Approve Alternative Authorization for Teachers Janae Barela and Sadie Pulliam

A motion was made by Trustee Blik and seconded by Trustee Mauroner to approve the alternative authorization application packets for teachers Janae Barela and Sadie Pulliam. The motion passed.

TRUSTEE INPUT

Trustee Mauroner thanked everyone for her opportunity to speak at the opening day for faculty. She is glad school started and is excited about the changes at the sports complex. She said we have good teachers and staff and is looking forward to a good year.

Trustee Shackelford said the school building projects look nice and they are something to be proud of.

Trustee Blik said the facilities look amazing and is happy to see how the district has progressed these last three years. She thanked Superintendent Ward for having a vision for the school buildings and said we have outstanding facilities and amazing staff. She is excited about the Learning Loss teachers and wants to see everyone healthy and happy.

Trustee Lowder agrees with everything that has been said and is grateful for his fellow Board members and is happy when everyone can attend the meetings. He is grateful to be a part of the school district and for the student’s education they receive. He thinks that opinions need to be known without being judged by someone having a differing opinion.

ADJOURNMENT

A motion was made by Trustee Mauroner and seconded by Trustee Shackelford to adjourn the meeting. The motion passed and the meeting adjourned at 8:40 pm.
