Board Minutes: 11/20/2019

The Board of Trustees of School District No. 58, Bingham County, Idaho met in regular session at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 20, 2019 at the Aberdeen School District Office in Aberdeen, Idaho. 

CALL TO ORDER AND ESTABLISHMENT OF A QUORUM

Chairman Elaine Blik opened the meeting at 5:35 p.m.  Present were Sherrie Mauroner, Todd Lowder and Mike Shackelford.  A quorum was established. David Wahlen arrived at 5:45 p.m.

PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE

Those present recited the Pledge of Allegiance.

DELEGATION AND PATRON INPUT

Ms. Johnson and two middle school students presented their visual learning block projects they created in their STEM class.  The student’s learned about braille for the visually impaired. 

SUPERINTENDENT AND ADMINISTRATORS’ REPORTS

Mrs. Ward discussed her written report.  She thanked the board for allowing her to attend the ISBA conference in Coeur d’Alene.  The conference was very good and she thanked Trustee David Wahlen for attending the conference with her.  Turkeys will be handed out on Dec. 20th at 1:30 p.m.  she added that the old high school boiler is leaking and she contacted the engineer with Hutchison Smith Architects for an estimate to replace it.  The boiler may cost $100,000 to $200,000 to replace, depending on a few options in fixing the problem. Next week a stop leak will be used to try and fix the problem. 

Mr. Pincock provided a written report and had nothing to add.  Reports are available for review at the district office in the 2019-2020 Board meeting Minutes attachments binder.

Ms. Mennear went over her written report.  STEM night was a huge success. She thanked all of those who helped make this such a great event.  The old mini lab in the middle school was converted to a STEM room and she would like to invite everyone to come by and see the new setup.  Ms. Lewis brought five of her STEM students to the Idaho Exhibition of Ideas (IDX) on Saturday, November 16th 2019.  The students designed a visual learning block to help visually impaired people to learn braille.  The students had to make several prototypes, design a website and 3D print this learning block. Jordan Jolley, a local author, spoke with the middle school students on Thursday, November 14th 2019 in the auditorium.  She thanked the library for donating the binding machine to the school district.

Ms. Colton discussed her written report.  The Veteran’s Day Program was held on November 11th.  Parent/Teacher Conferences were held on November 7th with 91% attendance.  She added that the Christmas Program will be at 6:30 p.m. on December 11th.  She is working on science curriculum and books are being reviewed by the school buildings.  On December 13th ISU will be at the elementary school to talk about the science curriculum.

Mr. Vaughn went over his written report.  He attended the Regional Special Education Directors training in Filer on November 14th and the Special Education Advisory Panel meeting in Boise on November 18th.  

APPROVAL OF AGENDA

There were changes to the agenda to add high school wrestling overnight trip requests to Boise, ID 12/6 to 12/7/19 and Jerome, ID 12/13 to 12/14/19 under Business Items – Actions 8C.  High school wrestling overnight trip requests to Twin Falls, ID 12-20 to 12-21-19, Boise, ID 1-2 to 1-4-20, Wendell, ID 1-17 to 1-18-20, Sugar Salem, ID 1-31 to 2-1-20, Challis, ID 2-7 to 2-8-20 and Boise, ID 2-27 to 2-29-20 were added under Business Items – Discussion 9D. 

A motion was made by Trustee Shakelford and seconded by Trustee Mauroner to approve the agenda as amended.  The motion passed.

A motion was made by Trustee Mauroner and seconded by Trustee Shackelford to approve Consent Items 7 A-F as listed on the agenda.  The motion passed.

BUSINESS ITEMS-ACTIONS

Approve Emergency School Closure on 10/29/19 Due to Blowing and Drifting Snow

A motion was made by Trustee Lowder and seconded by Trustee Wahlen to approve the Certificate of Closure for the emergency school closures on 10/29/19 due to blowing and drifting snow.  The motion passed.

Approve November Hire

A motion was made by Trustee Wahlen and seconded by Trustee Shackelford to approve the November new hire.  The motion passed.

Approve High School Overnight Wrestling Trip Requests to Boise, ID 12/6 to 12/7/19 and Jerome, ID 12/13 to 12/14/19

A motion was made by Trustee Shackelford and seconded by Trustee Lowder to approve the high school overnight trip requests to Boise, ID on 12/6 to 12/7/19 and Jerome, ID on 12/13 to 12/14/19.  The motion passed.

Transportation Director Buck Copeland discussed purchasing a new bus for fiscal year 2019-2020.  No motion is necessary, for discussion only.

TRUSTEE INPUT

Trustee Lowder appreciates everyone for the work they do at the school and loves the way the auditorium looks. 

Trustee Shackelford liked Ms. Johnson’s tour of the STEM classroom on parent/teacher conference night and saw the projects the students are working on.  He thought it was pretty cool and he thanked Ms. Johnson for the tour.

Truster Mauroner is excited about the STEM classroom and appreciated the middle school student’s STEM presentation.

Trustee Blik appreciates all the work with the STEM classes and is excited about high school basketball.  She wished everyone to have a great Thanksgiving.

Trustee Wahlen enjoyed the Idaho School Board Association convention held in Cour d’alene.  He met with other school boards and superintendents. Aberdeen measures up to other school districts and he is proud of Superintendent Ward and the school staff.  He would like to have an auditorium committee to bring in other events for our community.

A motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Trustee Mauroner and seconded by Trustee Wahlen.  The motion passed and the meeting adjourned at 7:08 p.m.
