Regular School Board Meeting

Wednesday, August 19, 2020

The Board of Trustees of School District No. 58, Bingham County, Idaho met in regular session at 7:00 p.m. on August 20, 2020 at the Aberdeen School District Office in Aberdeen, Idaho.

CALL TO ORDER AND ESTABLISHMENT OF A QUORUM

Chairman Todd Lowder opened the meeting at 7:06 p.m. Present were Sherrie Mauroner and David Wahlen. A quorum was established. Mike Shackelford and Elaine Blik were absent.

There was no delegation or patron input.

SUPERINTENDENT and ADMINISTATOR REPORTS

Mrs. Ward discussed her written report. She is happy to see everyone back to school. The district has purchased a face mask for everyone and federal programs has also purchased a face mask for everyone. Wearing masks is strongly recommended for anyone entering the school building. She has been talking with Hutchison, Smith Architecture to see what has to be done to have our wrestling room in the old high school gym area. They are looking into the safety regulations and ADA requirements if we use the upstairs of the old gym. The district purchased ten tables to use during lunch in an effort to spread our students out more due to the virus. These tables can also be used in the classrooms. She added that a student has been quarantined and the district has mandated that all staff now wear a mask.

Mrs. Mennear discussed her written report. Their book study this year is The Happiness Advantage. She read this book over the summer and is excited to study it with the staff this year. It has a lot of great practical applications for educators. Trustee Lowder added that he would like to read the book. Volleyball and cross country has started and she thanked the coaches who work hard with our students. Three practices have been held and games will start next week. She added that she has met with parents to show them how to use Google Class Room. Students will be accountable for meeting all requirements this year with attendance and their work assignments.

Mrs. Colton went over her written report. She has spoken with parents about their concerns and the online option for students. She is waiting for a few parents to call back with their decisions, but so far most students will attend school in person. For online students, homework and attendance is done daily and parents will be called when students are not logged on.

Mr. Vaughn discussed his written report. He is excited for our new special education staff this year. Emily Perkes will be teaching in the extended resource room at the elementary school. Veronica Carrillo will be the new Federal Programs secretary. He would like to thank Alma Medel for her services as the Federal Programs secretary for the last several years. Alma has been a great help in ensuring the program runs smoothly in several areas. She did a good job contacting and helping parents of special education students. She also translated for several parents of students in the district. He added that a few special education students are attending class on-line. Students can come to school and have a meeting for their reading interventions. Individualized student education plans will be available on-line.

Mr. Pincock did not provide a written report. He stated that the beginning of school has been good so far with about twenty students choosing to attend class on-line. Larry Elliott has been working on installing a new flag and pole for the football field. Corey Rowbury helped Mr. Elliot for his senior project. A volleyball game in American Falls was held on 8/19/20. The high school held an outside assembly. The students are excited to be back to school.

APPROVAL OF AGENDA

A motion was made by Trustee Mauroner and seconded by Trustee Wahlen to approve the agenda as presented. The motion passed.

A motion was made by Trustee Wahlen and seconded by Trustee Mauroner to approve Consent Items- Actions 7 (A-F). The motion passed.

Approve Classified Staff Resignation Letters from Dulce Centeno, Alma Medel and Mychelle Vollmer

A motion was made by Trustee Mauroner and seconded by Trustee Wahlen to approve the classified staff resignation letters from Dulce Centeno, Alma Medel and Mychelle Vollmer. The motion passed.

Aberdeen High School Athletics and Activities 2020-2021 School Year

After further discussion with high school principal Travis Pincock, the high school athletics and activities guidelines and procedures for the 2020-2021 school year will need to be approved in August for current sports and activities taking place this month. There was a change made to the title of the guidelines and procedures from Aberdeen High School Athletics and Activities Guidelines and Procedures for the 2020-2021 School Year to Aberdeen District Athletics and Activities Guidelines and Procedures for the 2020-2021 School Year. A motion was made by Trustee Wahlen and seconded by Trustee Mauroner to approve the Aberdeen District Athletics and Activities Guidelines and Procedures for the 2020-2021 School Year. The motion passed.

TRUSTEE INPUT

Trustee Mauroner appreciates the students, parents, teachers and administrators for what they do. She would like to walk through the schools soon to see how they are doing and hopes school can continue as planned.

Trustee Wahlen thanked everyone for their hard work. He said the first line of business is our students. He wants everyone to remain safe and paid tribute to Linda Gneiting. She did a good job helping out the school district and the community.

Trustee Lowder wanted to let the teachers know that he respects their concerns and the Board is sensitive to their feelings. There is no easy answer right now and he is concerned for our student’s education. Students need to be in the classroom and learn the social aspect of school as well. He is upset over the frenzy the media has caused in our country over COVID-19 and believes we need to do what is right for our students. He thanked everyone for the hard work they do for the school.

A motion was made by Trustee Mauroner and seconded by Trustee Wahlen to adjourn the meeting. The motion passed and the meeting adjourned at 8:30 p.m.
