Policy 971: Animals in School

The Aberdeen school district is committed to providing a high quality educational program to all students in a safe and healthy environment. No animals are allowed on school property. Administrators will contact authorities to remove animals on school property. Service animals will be permitted on school grounds subject to the district’s service animal policy (See Policy 970 or identify other policy number).

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM

Use of animals, including classroom pets, to achieve specific curriculum objectives may be allowed by the building principal provided (1) student health and safety is not jeopardized; and (2) the individual requesting that the animal be brought to school is responsible for adhering to any applicable state or local health regulations, including vaccination requirements, and any other conditions established by the principal to protect the health and well-being of students. Any domestic animal entering a school building must have proof of an up-to-date rabies vaccine.

STUDENT HEALTH

The health and well-being of students is the District’s highest priority. Animals may cause an allergic reaction or otherwise impair the health of students. No animals may be brought to school or kept in the school, classroom, office or common area that may negatively impact the health of any student who must utilize the area. Animals that case an allergic reaction or impair the health of students shall be removed from the school immediately so that no student shall have his/her health impaired and each student shall have full access to available educational opportunities.
