Policy 732: SCHOOL BUS EMERGENCIES

In the event of an accident or other emergency involving a school bus, the bus driver shall follow the emergency procedures developed by the superintendent or designee. A copy of the emergency procedures shall be located in each school bus. Bus drivers must be familiar with adopted emergency evacuation plans and any equipment in the bus that would aid in an actual evacuation (e.g. the use of all emergency exits, emergency/fire blankets, etc.).

Bus drivers shall conduct a practical emergency evacuation drill during each school semester, which shall include instruction in the location and operation of all emergency exits. The district shall conduct such other drills and procedures as may be necessary to ensure the safety of riders. To allow evacuation in the event of an emergency, items belonging to those riding the bus must be safely stowed and secured from any aisle or emergency exit.

To ensure that aisles and emergency exits are kept clear at all times, the superintendent or designee may issue rules limiting the size or number of items riders may bring with them on the bus. Such rules may also include identification of oversized or other potentially unsafe items that are prohibited from being transported in the passenger compartment of a school bus, such as skis, skateboards, large instruments, etc.

Before departure on each activity trip, bus drivers shall provide instruction on the location and operation of all emergency exits. Instruction should include a general review of safe riding practices, rules and procedures.
