Policy 654P1: Library Circulation Procedures

STUDENTS

Students may check out books, audio books, magazines and select reference materials. Checkout procedures will be completed by the library staff and items will be date stamped with the due date. Students will be limited to two (2) items at a time, unless items are of high demand, such as magazines, reference materials or highly popular books and series. Books normally circulate three (3) weeks. Only one (1) magazine may be checked out at a time per student. CDs, DVDs, videos, AV equipment, and items used for educational purposes within a teacher’s classroom may not be checked out by students. Books may be renewed for an additional three (3) week period. Magazines and reference materials may not be renewed unless no one else has requested the material.

Overdue Items

Students with overdue items may not check out additional library materials until the overdue library materials have been returned. After one (1) month, students with overdue materials will receive a written overdue notice from the library. After two (2) months, parents of students with overdue materials will receive written overdue notice from the library. There will be a fine of 5¢ per day for all books more than one (1) weeks late, up to a maximum of $5.00. The librarian reserves the right to waive fines due to extenuating circumstances.

Lost or Damaged Materials

Students are responsible for all library materials that are checked out to them. Students will be charged the replacement cost of an item that is lost or damaged beyond repair. Students must pay for the replacement of an item and receive a receipt before they will be allowed to check out additional library materials. If a lost item is found, the student may be reimbursed for the cost of the item if the item is returned by the end of the school year. Any student with financial constraints should see the librarian about other means of paying off the debt to replace lost or damaged materials.

TEACHERS AND STAFF

All staff members (teachers, administrators, paraprofessionals, etc.) may check out all library materials. These items include books, videos, CDs, DVDs, AV equipment, etc. Checkout procedures will be completed by library staff. Teachers will have no limit on the number of items they can check out at one time. Books, audio books, magazines, and reference materials may be checked out for 6 weeks. CDs, DVDs, and videos may be checked out for 6 weeks. AV equipment may be checked out for 2 weeks. Long-term loans are permitted; however, in order to fulfill other circulation needs, staff members are asked to return materials as promptly as possible when finished. Staff with overdue items will be notified and given the option to renew the overdue item if it is not in demand by other staff members. There will be no fines assessed for overdue items.

Lost or Damaged Materials

Staff members are responsible for all library materials that are checked out to them. Staff members will be charged the replacement cost of an item that is lose or damaged beyond repair. If a lost item is found, the staff member may be reimbursed for the cost of the item if it is returned by the end of the school year.

EXCEPTIONS

The librarian has authority to make accommodations to this policy depending on individual circumstances. (For example, students placed in foster care would not be held responsible for missing items left in the home).
