At or near the beginning of each school day, in all grades at all district schools, teachers or school employees in charge of classrooms shall provide a brief period of silence for a minimum of sixty (60) seconds with the participation of every student in the classroom. During such period, a student may, without interfering with or distracting another student, reflect, meditate, pray, or engage in another silent activity. During the period of silence, no other activities shall take place.
Teachers and other school employees shall require all students to remain silent and to make no distracting display so that each student may, in the exercise of the student’s individual choice, reflect, meditate, pray, or engage in any other silent activity that does not interfere with, district from, or impede other students’ exercise of individual choice.
Teachers and other school employees are prohibited from providing instruction to any student regarding the nature of any reflection that a student may engage in during the period of silence, other than as set forth in this policy.
The district will provide notice to parents and legal guardians, through student handbooks or other communications, including information on the period of silence, and will encourage parents and legal guardians to provide guidance to their students regarding such period of silence.
Students and school employees who violate the provisions of this policy may be subject to disciplinary action in accordance with district policy.
