Board Minutes: 11/16/2021

The Board of Trustees of School District No. 58, Bingham County, Idaho met in regular session at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 16, 2021 at the Aberdeen School District Office in Aberdeen, Idaho.

CALL TO ORDER AND ESTABLISHMENT OF A QUORUM

Chairman Todd Lowder opened the meeting at 5:42 p.m. Present were Mike Shackelford, Sherrie Mauroner, David Wahlen and Elaine Blik. A quorum was established.

PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE

Those present recited the Pledge of Allegiance.

DELEGATION AND PATRON INPUT

Shannon Schultz with Construction Services, Inc. discussed an HVAC system for the old high school gym, commons area and district office. Shannon recommended hiring an engineer to prepare plans for the HVAC system.

A motion was made by Trustee Mauroner and seconded by Trustee Shackelford to approve Construction Services, Inc. hiring an engineer to develop plans for an HVAC system for the old high school. The motion passed.

Students from high school teacher Cody Park’s FFA class presented their road trip and activities they participated in for their national convention that was held in Tennessee.

Students from high school teacher Aaron Spence’s BPA class presented their BPA program and events that they participate in and attend.

SUPERINTENDENT AND ADMINISTRATORS’ REPORTS

Mrs. Ward reviewed her written report. The district office has moved over to the new office and Mrs. Ward thanked the board for their support in getting the offices remodeled. Mrs. Ward will be attending the ISBA convention in Boise from November 17th through November 19th. A Parent Action Committee meeting was held on Wednesday, November 10th. At that meeting they discussed the school district’s Continuous Improvement Plan, the Covid Plan and all the Title I requirements and test results with the parents. Imperial Plastering completed the siding on the building, that wind blew off approximately 2 months ago. The amplifiers in the auditorium are not working. Mr. Millett indicated that he thought the power surge caused the problem. Mrs. Ward is still working with Idaho Power and Light to have them pay for the damages, but the district may have to claim the damages on our insurance. The surge took out three servers, our phone server and the amplifiers.

Mrs. Colton discussed her written report. She thanked Mrs. McCombs for her help with the assembly. The elementary school will honor 5 local veterans this year for Veteran’s Day. Each grade level will interview and write a biography about a chosen veteran. Our kindergarten will create their annual handprint flag and donate it to veterans. Our students will read biographies and sing to our honored veterans on November 10th at 2:15 p.m. in the auditorium. Mrs. Colton added that the students had a good time participating in the Veteran’s Day activity. Mrs. Colton thanked Erin Johnson and Chavonne Woods with the star lab that was set up to see the constellations.

Mr. Vaughn reviewed his report and highlighted the data from the ISAT in 2021 broken down by Ethnicity/ESL status percentages. The school received extra funds for our McKinney Vento (Homeless) program. These funds will be used to purchase more supplies such as clothing, winter gear, blankets and other school supplies. Mr. Vaughn completed the Graduation Rate appeal for 4-year and 5-year cohort groups. We are at or above a 90% graduation rate for students who enrolled in our district during the past 4-5 years that should have graduated last spring.

Mrs. Mennear discussed her written report. Basketball has started and she thanked the coaches who so generously give of their time to help our students. Parent/Teacher Conferences are Thursday, November 11, 2021. Mrs. Mennear added that Oscar Klassen, the CEO of JawsTec provided a tour of his company to our middle school students showing them industrial 3d printers used in his business.

Mr. Pincock discussed his written report. Debbie Ellis and Heather Clark have been working hard to get students to apply for post-secondary education opportunities during college application month. Most students have already applied, and many have also completed the FAFSA. There is also college fair night and FAFSA night on November 11. Mr. Pincock added that Cody Park received a third IQPS grant for $10,000 which will help in completing the greenhouse project.

There were changes to the agenda to modify Consent Items – Actions 7F. High School Wrestling – Boise, Idaho 12/3 – 12/4, Business Items – Discussion 9D. Purchasing a 72 and 24 Passenger School Bus and 9E. High School Wrestling – Boise, Idaho 1/6 to 1/8. A motion was made by Trustee Shackelford and seconded by Trustee Mauroner to approve the agenda as modified. The motion passed.

A motion was made by Trustee Mauroner and seconded by Trustee Wahlen to approve board policies 471, 473, 452, 455, 457, 475 and 568 as listed above. The motion passed.

October New Hires 2021

A motion was made by Trustee Shackelford and seconded by Trustee Blik to approve the October 2021 new hires. The motion passed.

Set Time and Date for Town Hall Meeting to Discuss Four-Day Calendar

The town hall meeting will be held in the high school auditorium on Thursday, 12/2/21 at 6:30 pm. After the town hall meeting, a board work session discussing the four-day calendar will be held on Thursday, 12/7/21 at 1:00 pm at the district office.

TRUSTEE INPUT

Trustee Wahlen enjoyed the FFA student presentations seeing the United States through Nashville, Tennesee and the BPA student presentations. He enjoyed working with Mike Shackelford and said he was an awesome board member and he had great respect for him.

Trustee Mauroner enjoyed the student presentations and said the constellation STEM night with the middle school was cool. She enjoyed working with Mike Shackelford and is going to miss him.

Trustee Blik said Mike Shackelford was a huge voice of reason on the school board and he thinks outside the box. She said he had contributed to the Ag center in the visions committee which was set up to discuss the new high school project as well as our other building projects. She will miss him as a trustee. She said the gym looks good and the colors like nice.

Trustee Shackelford congratulated Amy Burusco in winning the school board election. He appreciates working with all the trustees and for the opportunity to serve on the school board.

Trustee Lowder misses Mike Shackelford’s input if he misses a board meeting. He thanked Mike for everything he has done on the board. He is excited about the new district office and thinks the building looks good. He would like to see if the upstairs of the building can be finished.

A motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Trustee Shackelford and seconded by Trustee Mauroner. The motion passed and the meeting adjourned at 8:35 p.m.
