Board Minutes: 09/17/2025

The Board of Trustees of School District No. 58, Bingham County, Idaho met in regular session at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 17, 2025 at the Aberdeen School District Office in Aberdeen, Idaho.

CALL TO ORDER AND ESTABLISHMENT OF A QUORUM

Chairman Brian Rowlan opened the meeting at 6:00 p.m.  Present were Sherrie Mauroner, James Patten and Aimee Elliott.  Amy Burusco was absent.  A quorum was established.

DELEGATION AND PATRON INPUT

Financial Auditor Dan Coleman with Quest CPAs discussed the results of the annual audit performed for fiscal year ending June 30, 2025. 

SUPERINTENDENT AND ADMINISTRATORS’ REPORTS

Mrs. Ward discussed her written report.  The fish booth at the state fair had another successful year and Mrs. Ward thanked Amy Burusco for her work.  We have a great new announcer at the home football games.  Mrs. Ward encouraged everyone to come to the games and experience the new energy.  Harvest Break is scheduled to start September 22nd.  If any changes need to be made, it has to be done before then.  Three rooms have been reserved for the Coeur d’Alene Resort for the annual Idaho School Board Association meeting.  Mrs. Ward reminded the Trustees that are attending to be sure to register for the convention. 

Mr. Pincock provided a written report.  Homecoming week has been moved to September 22-27 because Wendell has cancelled their football game with us.  The homecoming dance was held on September 13th, but all the other homecoming festivities will be pushed back a week.  The high school teachers participated in a professional development class about how to engage our ELL students.  The English department received training on how to use Turnitin.  They are excited to use this software as a tool to help students learn how to use AI in a productive way which does not hamper their ability to learn.

Ms. Taylor discussed her written report.  Many of her staff helped out with the Fish Booth this year.  Ms. Taylor thanked those that keep the Fish Booth going for the funds to help our teachers and students.  Delta Dental will bring their Grins on the Go program to our school.  This program offers students free cavity prevention clinic services including fluoride varnishing, dental sealants and oral health education.  Nicole Shackelford will be attending the Stronger Together conference in Boise on September 18th-19th.  This conference brings together school-based mental health wellness professionals to learn about the tools, strategies, and inspiration needed to expand access to mental health and wellness support for Idaho’s K-12 students.  Volleyball Districts will be held at our school on October 3rd.  Wrestling starts October 1st.   Andrew Gilbert resigned from coaching.  Ms. Taylor thanked Mr. Gilbert for all the time and effort he has put into the program. The middle school is currently seeking a new head coach.  Girls Basketball starts October 6th

Mrs. Colton discussed her written report.  The annual Battle of the Books for 4th and 5th grade students is planned to be held in February.  3rd graders will watch the battle again this year.  Fall pictures were taken on September 16th.  Our teachers have attended the following Professional Development so far:  Wonders introduction presented by McGraw Hill.  Go to Strategies presented by Gretchen Kinghorn, Wonders questions and answers presented by Joy Mickelsen and the teachers are viewing several tutorials for our new Amira/IRI assessment.  This year’s Porfessional Development book study is The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt for those teachers that signed up.  Parent/Teacher conferences will be help on November 7th from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm.  Mrs. Colton thanked Ed Powell for his quick response to fixing some pipes in the elementary school that were leaking.

Mr. Vaughn discussed his written report.  Our secondary teachers attended the Essential Components of an IEP training in Pocatello on September 10th.  This training is for new teachers. The first Paraprofessional training was held on September 8th and this meeting focused on classroom behavior management.  The State Medicaid office has recently cut Medicaid reimbursement by 4%.  This is a further cut to funding for students with disabilities.  Idaho Medicaid is seeking comments from the public on this issue.  This can be accessed on their website.  Mr. Vaughn is continuing to work with SpotKids for occupational therapy services.  There will be two certified occupational assistants and an occupational therapist coming to Aberdeen this year.

A motion was made by Trustee Patten and seconded by Trustee Elliott to approve the agenda as presented.  The motion passed.

A motion was made by Trustee Elliott and seconded by Trustee Mauroner to approve consent items-actions A-E as presented.  The motion passed.

Approve Monthly Staff Changes

A motion was made by Trustee Mauroner and seconded by Trustee Elliott to approve the monthly staff changes.  The motion passed.

Approve 2024-2025 Annual Audit Report

A motion was made by Trustee Patten and seconded by Trustee Mauroner to approve the 2024-2025 annual audit.  The motion passed.

Approve the Aberdeen School District FY 25-26 Continuous Improvement Plan

A motion was made by Trustee Elliott and seconded by Trustee Mauroner to approve the Aberdeen School District FY 25-26 Continuous Improvement Plan.  The motion passed.

Approve the FY 25-26 School District Student Handbook

A motion was made by Trustee Patten and seconded by Trustee Elliott to approve the FY 25-26 School District Student Handbook.  The motion passed.

Approve 2025-2026 School Bus Routes

A motion was made by Trustee Elliott and seconded by Trustee Mauroner to approve the 2025-2026 school bus routes and drivers.  The motion passed.

Approve Invoice from Superior Construction, LLC /Ace Hardware for Elementary School Ceiling Project

There was discussion about the request for additional payment to Superior Construction, LLC/ Ace Hardware for their work to complete the elementary school ceiling project.  The Project took four additional weeks with three laborers at forty hours a week due to the ceiling not being straight and this additional work was needed to correctly install the new ceiling tiles.  Trustee Mauroner requested that any future work on projects that require changes to the contract will need prior approval of any change order before the additional work is approved for additional payment.  After further discussion, a motion was made by Trustee Patten and seconded by Trustee Elliott to approve the additional invoice from Superior Construction, LLC/Ace Hardware for $10,000 for the elementary school ceiling project.  The motion passed.

Discuss the ISBA Superintendent Search Service

There was discussion on the three options that the Idaho School Board Association offers school districts and the prices in searching for a new superintendent.  The Idaho State Department of Education will reimburse some of the costs through continuous improvement funds.  No motion was necessary, for discussion only.
