Board Minutes: 03/16/2022

The Board of Trustees of School District No. 58, Bingham County, Idaho met in regular session at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 16th 2022 at the Aberdeen School District Office in Aberdeen, Idaho.

CALL TO ORDER AND ESTABLISHMENT OF A QUORUM

Chairman Todd Lowder opened the meeting at 4:44 p.m. Also present were Sherrie Mauroner, David Wahlen and Elaine Blik. A quorum was established. Amy Burusco arrived at 5:10 p.m.

EXECUTIVE SESSION

At 4:45 p.m., a motion was made by Trustee Wahlen that the Board of Trustees of School District No. 58 recess from an open meeting into executive session pursuant to Section 74-206(1), Idaho Code, in order to discuss Section 74-206(1): Subsection (b) to consider the evaluation, dismissal, or discipling of, or to hear complaints or charges brought against, a public officer, employee, staff member or individual agent, or public school student, and that following the executive session the Board will reconvene in public session for the purpose of conducting further business or for adjournment of the meeting.

A roll call vote was held with the following results:

Todd Lowder – Yes; Amy Burusco – Absent; Sherrie Mauroner – Yes; David Wahlen – Yes; and Elaine Blik – Yes. The motion passed.

The regular session reconvened at 5:30 p.m. Elaine Blik left the meeting at 6:25 p.m.

DELEGATION AND PATRON INPUT

High school student Jordan Valeriano presented his senior project to the board. He replaced five flag poles on Aberdeen school grounds for his project. The high school girls’ basketball team and coach Lincoln Driscoll talked about their experiences at the state tournament and playing as a team this last season. Shannon Schultz with Construction Services, Inc. presented the costs of the bid for the Aberdeen gym/district office HVAC upgrades project. The board discussed some of the items on the bid that can be removed including the use of existing duct work instead of new duct work and removing computerized controls to reduce project costs.

APPROVAL OF AGENDA

There were changes to the agenda to add Shannon Schultz with Construction Services, Inc. under item 6. Delegation and Patron Input, Business Items – Actions 10D. to approve the bid for the Aberdeen gym/district office HVAC upgrades and to remove executive session – personnel under item 12.

A motion was made by Trustee Mauroner and seconded by Trustee Burusco to approve the agenda as modified. The motion passed.

SUPERINTENDENT and ADMINISTATOR REPORTS

Superintendent Ward reviewed her written report. She congratulated all the students that went to State competitions and said they made our school proud. Marina Taylor and Mrs. Ward will meet with the parents involved with the Title I committee to report on how the students are doing and to listen to suggestions on how to improve. Mrs. Ward thanked all those that supported the supplemental levy for the school district.

Travis Pincock discussed his written report. The E-sports team is doing well and are currently in first and fourth place. The wrestlers had a great showing at the state wrestling tournament. Mr. Pincock congratulated Gerardo Partida, Hiatt Beck, Antwan Mosqueda and Eston Beck for placing at state. Mr. Pincock congratulated coach Ingersoll and the boys’ team for their basketball season as well. Colin Brien accepted the position to teach music and Mr. Pincock welcomed him to Aberdeen to teach and continue to build the music program. Braden Driscoll has accepted the position as head football coach.

Ann Mennear reviewed her written report. Sherry Arnoldson has agreed to substitute teach in the mornings while teacher Mattie Bedwell is on maternity leave. Terri Foster will be substitute teaching for Mrs. Bedwell in the afternoon. The middle school is so lucky to have these two experienced teachers who are willing to teach our students during this time. Mrs. Mennear attended the GEAR UP Spring meeting in McCall, Idaho March 6-8th. The ski/skate activity this year was on March 8th and March 15th and there were no injuries. The first track meet will be held on March 31st and the time and place is still to be determined. So far, about 80 students have been interesting in participating. Mrs. Mennear added that Yahoo news reported that the five-part Netflix series Our Great National Parks narrated by President Barack Obama will begin on April 13th. Middle school students from Aberdeen will be part of the series at Yellowstone National Park.

Robi Jo Colton discussed her written report. The health curriculum choices for adoption are available for review. Parent/teacher conference was held on February 24th and parents were invited to view and voice their opinion on the curriculum. The health curriculum will be adopted at the April 20th regular board meeting. March 17th is the end of the 3rd quarter. Mrs. Colton added that she is requesting a new quote for the price of the curriculum since the wrong year was listed.

David Vaughn discussed his written report. WIDA Access for ELL’s testing has been completed in all buildings. Teachers will receive results in the spring. Anne Hubbard, Veronica Carrillo and Mr. Vaughn helped administer the assessments. Mr. Vaughn thanked the teachers for their flexibility during the test. Paraprofessional training is continuing and there was a training on Friday, March 11th. The state board approved a waiver so that students graduating this year are not required to take a College Entrance Exam. Our students will still be participating in the Idaho SAT day on April 13th. Many students will still be taking this test for college admission. Mr. Vaughn added that two para pros are leaving the school district. Gabe Snow and Tabitha Bagino will be working elsewhere. Mr. Vaughn thanked them for their work with the school and he will now be looking to hire their replacements.

A motion was made by Trustee Mauroner and seconded by Trustee Burusco to approve Consent Items-Actions A-G as presented. The motion passed.

A motion was made by Trustee Wahlen and seconded by Trustee Mauroner to approve board policies 294P1, 448, 448P1, 448F1, 506, 506.50, 620, 710, 712, 732, 738, 808, 850.60, 910, 922, 972F1 and 1006. The motion passed.

Board policy 498 – Staff/Student Relations was tabled for further discussion.

Approve Hiring High School/Middle School Music Teacher Colin Brien

A motion was made by Trustee Burusco and seconded by Trustee Mauroner to approve hiring high school/middle school music teacher Colin Brien. The motion passed.

Approve Bid Estimate for Aberdeen Gym/District Office HVAC Upgrades

A motion was made by Trustee Wahlen and seconded by Trustee Mauroner to approve the bid estimate for the Aberdeen gym/district office HVAC upgrades with modifications to reduce mechanical direct costs and to add in engineering design for an estimated cost of $255,065. The motion passed.

TRUSTEE INPUT

Trustee Mauroner thanked everyone that voted in support of the supplemental levy. We need this to run our schools. She thanked the administrators and teachers for all they do. She is excited that Colin Brien will be the new music teacher in Aberdeen.

Trustee Burusco is grateful for our community in passing the supplemental levy and congratulated the girls’ basketball team for playing well at the state tournament.

Trustee Wahlen congratulated the girls’ basketball team, the boys’ and girls’ wrestlers and the music department for their participation in the state tournaments. They did a good job representing the school. He thanked the teachers for putting in their best efforts every day and is grateful for the students.

Trustee Lowder appreciated the girls’ basketball team coming to the board meeting and discussing their experiences at the state tournament. He appreciates the wrestlers and the other school groups that have made it to state competitions. He is thankful to live in Aberdeen and to see the kids in their classes. He appreciates the teachers and administrators for the work they do.

ADJOURNMENT

A motion was made by Trustee Burusco and seconded by Trustee Mauroner to adjourn the meeting. The motion passed and the meeting adjourned at 7:25 p.m.
