Board Minutes: 11/18/2020

The Board of Trustees of School District No. 58, Bingham County, Idaho met in regular session at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 18, 2020 at the Aberdeen School District Office in Aberdeen, Idaho.

CALL TO ORDER AND ESTABLISHMENT OF A QUORUM

Chairman Todd Lowder opened the meeting at 5:37 p.m. Present were Mike Shackelford, Sherrie Mauroner, David Wahlen and Elaine Blik. A quorum was established.

PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE

Those present recited the Pledge of Allegiance.

DELEGATION AND PATRON INPUT

There was no delegation or patron input.

SUPERINTENDENT AND ADMINISTRATORS’ REPORTS

Mrs. Ward discussed her written report. She thanked those involved with the Parent/Teacher conferences. She also thanked STOTZ Equipment for donating a mule for our maintenance crew to use this winter. Mrs. Ward added that the new mule will be delivered when the blade to plow the snow is received. The vehicle will have both heating and air conditioning in the cab.

Mr. Pincock provided a written report. The book study for The Happiness Advantage is going great. The teachers seem to be really enjoying the book. Mr. Pincock added that Cody Park received the third IQPS grant for $10,000 for the high school greenhouse. Mr. Pincock congratulated Briley Driscoll for her first win as the C-Team girls’ basketball coach. There will be a virtual college tour provided by Gear Up for high school students.

Ms. Mennear provided a written report. Tutoring is offered Monday through Thursday and several students are taking advantage of this service. The district wrestling tournament will be held on November 20th, 2020 in American Falls. Due to covid-19, no spectators are allowed, however there will be a camera on each mat. Mrs. Mennear thanked everyone who helped take care of things while she was quarantined for the past ten days.

Ms. Colton discussed her written report. Parent/Teacher conferences were held on November 12th with 89% of parents attending. For Veteran’s Day the students had coloring pages posted on the Elementary News. This year’s book study is The Happiness Advantage: How a Positive Brain Fuels Success in Work and Life by Shawn Achor. Team 3 shared on November 6th and Team 4 plans to present on November 20th.

Mr. Vaughn went over his written report. He attended the second state Special Education Advisory Panel meeting via Zoom from Boise on November 15th. They had more discussions on how different school districts are handling covid-19 for their students. Mr. Vaughn thanked everyone for helping out in special education while he was in quarantine.

APPROVAL OF AGENDA

There were changes to the agenda to modify Business Items – Actions 8G. from Review & Approve Covid-19 Athletic Plan to Discuss Filming Athletic Games. A motion was made by Trustee Shackelford and seconded by Trustee Mauroner to approve the agenda as modified. The motion passed.

A motion was made by Trustee Mauroner and seconded by Trustee Shackelford to approve Consent Items 7 A-F as listed on the agenda. The motion passed.

Approve Board Policy 640 – Curriculum

A motion was made by Trustee Shackelford and seconded by Trustee Mauroner to approve Board Policy 640 – Curriculum. The motion passed.

Approve Board Policy 872 – Inventory Records of Fixed Assets

A motion was made by Trustee Mauroner and seconded by Trustee Shackelford to approve Board Policy 872 – Inventory Records of Fixed Assets. The motion passed.

Approve Retirement Letter from High School Counselor Debbie Ellis

A motion was made by Trustee Blik and seconded by Trustee Mauroner to approve the retirement letter from high school counselor Debbie Ellis. The motion passed.

Approve the 2020-2021 Bus Bid

A motion was made by Trustee Mauroner and seconded by Trustee Shackelford to approve the 2020-2021 bus bid from Western Mountain Bus & Auto Sales for $94,982. The motion passed.

Approve Call for Bids for High School Gym Replacement Bleachers

A motion was made by Trustee Wahlen and seconded by Trustee Blik to approve the call for bids for high school gym replacement bleachers. The motion passed.

Discuss Filming Athletic Games

For discussion only, no motion was necessary.

Review High School Trip Request – Boys’ Basketball – New Plymouth 12/21 – 12/23

A motion was made by Trustee Wahlen and seconded by Trustee Shackelford to approve the high school trip request for boys’ basketball to New Plymouth on 12/21 to 12/23. The motion passed.

TRUSTEE INPUT

Trustee Mauroner is thankful for our school faculty and staff going through all of this craziness with covid-19 trying to figure things out for the students to go to school and participate in sports and extra-curricular activities. She hopes the kids can have a normal school year and play sports.

Trustee Shackelford had nothing to add.

Trustee Wahlen agrees with Trustee Mauroner. He appreciates everyone in the district and the essential workers in our community for the work that they do. We are courageous and not afraid and he is happy that we have carried on.

Trustee Blik wished everyone a happy Thanksgiving than thanked Mrs. Mennear for her comments on covid-19.

Trustee Lowder appreciates everyone in the district and what they are going through. He is happy to live in Aberdeen.

A motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Trustee Wahlen and seconded by Trustee Shackelford. The motion passed and the meeting adjourned at 7:15 p.m.
